The Dutch organist Liuwe Tamminga, who lives in Italy, is doing good business, both artistically and professionally, with a rapidly growing discography and rave reviews. With this CD he shows once again that this is right. Giovanni Gabrieli's keyboard work can be found on CDs quite regularly, but these are often compilation CDs. This is one of the few CDs that is entirely devoted to this oeuvre;
and moreover Tamminga is today the authority for such a repertoire. Little needs to be said about the quality of these performances - it can be noted, however, that the CD booklet is very informative for both enthusiasts and connoisseurs. And the repertoire deserves this too: some works have been recorded on CD here for the first time. Yet this is not a CD to immediately listen to in its entirety, the mild sound of the organ is somewhat monotonous for that. But now and then a few pieces: beautiful. (TC)more
