One of the most famous organs in the world is that of the Grote of Sint-Bavo Church in Haarlem, with its enormous mahogany-colored case that reaches almost to the ceiling. The organ was completed in 1738 by Christian Müller. In previous centuries the instrument was already so famous that , and went there on a pilgrimage. It was an exciting experience for Joseph Nolan to play this particular organ
… for his 10th Signum CD. As a starting point for the program he chose the Sonata of the young Reubke, who was a protégé of Liszt. Nolan discovered that this romantic masterpiece had probably never been recorded in St. Bavo for a commercial record. Nolan's interpretation is compelling and virtuoso. He honestly admits that he has avoided the use of keyboard couples as much as possible, so as not to slow down his dexterity. There is something to be said about this choice, a Dutch concert organist would not have let that happen. But to be fair, it produced a transparent sound that was nicely received by the microphones. 's Chaconne is also special(originally for solo violin!) in an impressive arrangement by Henri Messerer. (HJ)more
