sparked some criticism in 2008. This was not only due to some texts, whether or not anti-Semitic, but also the bombastic character of the music. The latter certainly does not apply to the music on this CD. In this 'oratorio' MacMillan continues where he left off at the end of the St John Passion. So this concerns the Biblical stories about the resurrected Jesus, appearing to Mary Magdalene, Peter
… and the other disciples. In terms of character, this 'oratorio' is somewhat reminiscent of 's so-called 'church parables'. There are few vocalists, the instrumental line-up is also small and chamber music. The narration is occasionally interrupted by beautiful instrumental solos and ensemble playing. This CD is the first with which the wants to bring the culture of Scotland to the attention. Scotland's most famous composer could of course not be missing. Hence this composition commission from the Hebrides Ensemble to James MacMillan. (HJ)more
