'Kapellmeister of space'. That is the honorary title that composer Daan Manneke prefers to adorn himself. This fascination for space has to do with the Zeeland countryside of his youth, with his Calvinist origins and the singing of psalms on whole notes. In his own words: “All my music has to do with vocality: breathing; approach and disappear; compacting and disintegrating. My main keyword: SPACE.
' Manneke himself describes this CD as an archipelago (an archipelago). The various pieces - choral works, accordion solos - fall into each other like links, as if one piece continues where the previous one ends. And that while these pieces are often composed in very different periods. Much here is beautiful. And especially Car ta voix est douce, the last of the three Song Motets from which this album takes its title. It's wonderful how the old melody of Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme flourishes in this love song. (HJ)more
