This album contains world premieres of the works of the 17th century German baroque composer, musician and teacher Thomas Selle and some of his contemporaries. Monika Mandelartz studied intensively a manuscript by Selle that was found in the church library of Salzwedel. It is unknown how this manuscript came to be there, since Selle has no connection with that place. He probably studied in Leipzig,
… after which he fulfilled several functions in the northwest region of Schleswig-Holstein for several years. The highlight of his career was his position as director of church music in Hamburg, where he was responsible for the music in all five main churches. The Muses' Fellows perform music from the manuscript, which is an extensive music collection of some 250 pieces by Selle himself and fellow composers. It was really used in musical practice, as can be seen from the numerous notes by Selle himself. A fascinating document of church music, secular songs and repertoire written for special occasions such as funerals and weddings. (SvdP)more
