Christian Friedrich Ruppe (1753-1826) came from Salzungen in Thuringia. In 1774 he was enrolled as a student at the University of Leiden. However, he decided to go into music anyway. In 1790 he became university chapelmaster and a few years later he started teaching music theory. He was also organist of the Lutheran Church. His oeuvre includes many chamber music works, songs and church cantatas.
Two cantatas were found in 1987 in the archives of the Holy Spirit or Poor Orphan and Children's Home in Leiden. In 1796 an orphanage choir was founded on the initiative of Ruppe; something that was very common abroad. It was a mixed choir, but without tenors. Ruppe composed a Christmas and Easter cantata for this choir. His style is strongly influenced by the opéra comique especially in terms of rhythmic and dynamic twists. ... " Jed Wentz has based himself on Ruppe's own performance practice for the performance of the Christmas and Easter music. He fitted the tempi that Ruppe prescribed in his chamber music works into the framework of the church music that was common at the time ... "(quote from CD booklet).
