This mass is inspired by a story by Horacio Quiroga and tells about Juan DariƩn, a young jaguar made man by a miracle who after the death of his mother proves to be unable to withstand the evil human world, dies a martyr's death, but is reborn and takes revenge. Composer Elliot Goldenthal turned it into a musical theater work with fantastic stage creations and on this CD combined it in a surprising
… way with a thirteenth-century requiem mass by Thomas van Celano. In other words, parts from Goldenthal's Mass and Celano's can be heard alternately. The musical ensemble consists of violin, trumpet, tuba, marimba, percussion instruments from all over the world, clay flutes, mouth harp, didgeridoo, keyboards, prepared piano, accordion, clarinet and saxophone. It premiered in New York in 1988 and since then the play has been performed successfully many times. (GO) _more
