We don't read every day in the newspaper that a work by a classical composer has been stripped of its dust for centuries. In 2001, the discovery of a Gloria van Handel was so sensational that two newspapers broke the news embargo and released the news four days before the official announcement. The existence of this Gloria for soprano solo was already known to specialists. Countertenor Nicholas
… Clapton had already mentioned the manuscript in Early Music in 1983 at The Royal Academy of Music in London. However, he considered the attribution to Handel to be 'highly dubious'. Nevertheless, one of the separate batches folders explicitly mentions Handel as the author. Professor Hans Joachim Marx of the University of Hamburg (the de facto discoverer of Commercial authorship) believes that the Gloria was part of a collection of William Savage. At the time, this singer worked closely with Handel; first as a boy soprano and later as a bass. More important than the authorship is the quality of the music: festive in the corner sections and expressive in the beautiful Qui tollis. Despite her somewhat advanced age, Emma Kirkby is still the ideal soprano for this kind of musical athletics. She is accompanied by the Royal Academy of Music Baroque Orchestra, conducted by Laurence Cummings. The CD also contains a re-release of the Dixit Dominus with Anne Sofie von Otter and the Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble (recording: 1986).
