is one of the most important composers of the Baroque era. His opera Dardanus is considered a masterpiece. This mainly concerns the innovative music, because critics have been less satisfied with the opera text. Already at the premiere in 1739, complaints were made about the many incredible twists and turns in the story caused by supernatural forces. Rameau then made a new version (from 1744) in
… which the number of divine interventions was greatly reduced. Yet nowadays the version from 1739 is often performed, supplemented by the most fascinating music from the version from 1744. This is also the case in this production of the opera in Bordeaux. In its original version, Dardanus is a true Baroque opera in which the gods regularly descend from heaven to meddle with mortals. The many ballets are typically French. Director presents all this with a nod to the sweet colors and opulence of the rococo era and to the baroque theater with its artificial form of acting. The singers are mostly excellent. A long ride (more than three hours), but definitely worth it for the enthusiast. (CP)more
