Handel lovers should not complain, because the composer is honored by one top singer (es) after another with a beautiful recital CD. Anyone who has been able to admire Joyce DiDonato on DVD as Dejanira in Hercules will not be surprised that she has devoted her first Handel CD to the theme of anger (Furore). The role of a passionate, but insanely jealous husband who does not let himself be cheated,
… suits her very well. Dejanira is a complex personality, just like Medea who, in her grief and anger, wishes her faithless ex the most gruesome horrors. These characters are torn apart by contrasting emotions. Handel managed to capture all these feelings in beautiful melodies and rousing coloratura passages. Also vocally DiDonato is perfectly at home here. She has an evenly beautifully shaped voice from high to low, is technically solid and has no problem with colouration. With conductor Christophe Rousset by her side, it has become a great Handel album, the umpteenth, but we can't get enough of it. (CP)more
