It is actually strange that Schnittke's penitential palms have been recorded so little: this is only the third recording in sixteen years. It cannot be due to the difficulty, because the Concerto for choir by the same composer alone is twice as often recorded on CD - and that is perhaps even more difficult than the penitentials. (Not to mention Ligeti's incredibly difficult Lux aeterna, which has
… been recorded frequently…) It cannot be due to inaccessibility either, because by twentieth century standards this clearly modern music is nevertheless very compelling. Moreover, the strongly religious-spiritual atmosphere should appeal to many today. Every reason to give this music a chance, and Marcus Creed does it with verve on this CD. The choir is clearly above the music, and can absolutely compete with the recording that has been the benchmark until now, of the Swedish Chamber Choir (DBX5242). It is a pity that both recordings use very spacious acoustics. Of course this music must have a very orthodox sound, but here the choir sound really starts to swim… For example, the listener misses the beautiful miniatures that are hidden in this masterpiece by Schnittke.
