In the silence of the word

This CD features the typical, thoughtful Gregorian chant of the Carthusian monks of Parkminster, England. Mainly thanks to the film 'Into great silence' the Carthusians, the strictest order in the Catholic Church, have attracted considerable attention. These monks are practically the only ones in the Catholic monastic world who actually perform the night prayer in the middle of the night, between… about 00:00 and 02:30. A short version can be found on this CD, supplemented with some songs of mass. Compared to many other CDs released by monasteries themselves, the singing here is remarkably good. Apparently a taciturn life is good for the singing voice: Carthusians spend about 18 hours a day in solitary silence. (TC)more
