Caetano Veloso has released a cartload of albums. To make things more difficult, he released three of his albums without a title. This is the self-titled 1969 album, best known for its characteristic white cover with only Veloso's signature on it. Veloso was living in exile in London at the time, because the military regime considered him subversive. A number of Veloso's lyrics are politically
… charged, but he makes sure that they do not become musical pamphlets. Opener Irene sounds hippy with his acoustic guitar and cheerful harmony vocals. But appearances are deceptive, because the praised Irene turns out to be a machine gun. Veloso proves to be a musical omnivore who draws on psychedelics, Northern Brazilian folk music and rock. Caetano Veloso was one of the few Brazilians who sometimes used English and that went well for him. (PdK)more
