The year is 2006. Guitarist Osman Jr wanted to unite the nuyorican salsa sound with funk as was done in the seventies by the musicians of the world famous Fania label. To this end, he gathered a number of musical friends with a common love for jazz, Latin, funk, soul and hip-hop around him. Unfortunately these musicians and especially the vocalists, despite a more than large portion of good will,
… nowhere reach the level of the artists who signed with Fania at the time. This could be because Setenta's home base is in Paris, not quite a city with a thriving salsa scene. As a result, Setenta has to contend with a poignant lack of conviction, both instrumentally and vocally. The power is lacking and that's a shame, because Funky Tumbao is full of good ideas. (AD)more
