Few Spaniards articulate more clearly than Amparo Sánchez from Granada. The Spanish reads her lyrics almost like a poet on the often brooding Spanish sounds. For over a decade she was the face of the mestizo band Amparanoia. The former teenage mother is now ready for her second studio album, called Alma De Cantaora. Just like on her previous record Tucson-Habana, she enlisted the help of some
… colleagues. Mexican 'grandma' La Abuela Margarita can be heard on the delightful opening song Alma De Cantaora, but the best collaboration is with the guys from Calexico, who could also be heard on her first solo album. This time Muchacho is the outcome, a dark mariachin number. The duet Vieja Pasión with Mane Ferret is also beautiful. Amparo Sánchez shows the best of herself on Alma De Cantaora, and the best of all is that it is all perfectly understandable for people with a short course in the Spanish language. (BvdV)more
