Nightclub Le Sahel opened its doors in 1972. It had to become Senegal's nightclub. That is why the wealthy owner looked for the best musicians in Dakar and put together the house band with them. It was a success. The group, named after the nightclub, played steaming dance music for evenings: a little soul and a lot of salsa. Salsa was imported from Cuba in the late 1960s and was immensely popular
… in Senegal. Great salsa artists like Johnny Pacheco and Celia Cruz came to Dakar and shared the stage with the big band of Le Sahel. Le Sahel was mainly a live band, the group released only one album. To forget that lack, the most important musicians reunited in 2015 for an album that revives the repertoire of yesteryear. Expect tight African salsa, mainly due to the rich wind parts, continues to swing irresistibly throughout an album. (PdK)more
