An enchanting and elegant world fusion of jazz and Mongolian ceremonial singing. As a child, Ulaanbaatar-born singer Enkhjargal Erkhembayar AKA Enji already felt a passion for music. At first she wanted to become a music teacher, but she eventually ended up in Germany after a jazz exchange program. With a light voice, Enji sings in the style Urtiin Duu or the long song. This is a ritualistic form
… of expression with many embellishments (melisms) per word. With her now third studio album, Ulaan, she has grown even more in finding her unique voice and original fusion music style. Enji has expanded her combo to include, in addition to Paul Brändle (guitar) and Munguntovch Tsolmonbayar (bass), now Brazilians María Portugal (drums) and Joana Queiroz (clarinet). Mongolian folk-inspired vocals are thus enriched by subtle Latin rhythms. (SvdP)more
