John Beltran is known for his highly melodic Detroit-style techno productions. His work is of the same high quality and is comparable to that of Derrick May and Carl Craig, with whom he has also worked several times. This part of his sound can be heard on the CDs Earth And Nightfall, Ten Days Of Blue and Moving Through Here. For Sun Gypsy, however, Beltran takes a completely different path. Apparently
… he took a plane to Rio in order to continue his activities there. This sounds like a radical change and it is, because on Sun Gypsy there is not a single bit of techno in sight. Instead, Beltran engages in samba, bossa nova, batucada, jazzy guitar parts and rousing percussion. After the extensive looting of the Brazilian musical treasure trove by others, it has become very difficult for Beltran to make a CD with the same innovative impulses as his techno productions, but that does not mean that Sun Gypsy has become a dazzling summer party record, which is comparable to past productions of United Future Organization and Jazzanova.
