Magou was born in 1975 in a small Senegalese fishing village. His father left the family early on and went out into the world as a singer in mainly Afro-Cuban groups. Mother and grandmother gave Magou a good upbringing and regretted that Magou chose a career in music. But music has been Magou's passion since childhood: he played percussion, kora and guitar and was especially able to express his
… heart and soul in singing. He listened to a lot of music on the radio: jazz, reggae but also African music such as from Salif Keita. After playing in rap, soul and reggae bands, he decided to make his own compositions and perform them in bars and support acts. European record companies approached Magou for his exceptional voice, which evokes associations with flamenco or blues artists in terms of rawness and soulful passion. But the Network label was the first to take a real interest in his music. Magou's socially conscious songs on the album Africa Yewul deal with slavery, war, love, Mama Africa and respect for the earth. The combo Dakar Transit frames Magou's convincing vocals with lively afro-pop featuring snippets of blues, flamenco and afro-cuban music. Well worth it! (SvdP)more
