Forro In The Dark

Forró is festive music from the north of Brazil with a leading role for the accordion. For a long time the forró had a burly image. The 'developed' Brazilian turned his nose to it. That changed when famous artists such as Gilberto Gil and Milton Nascimento also recorded forró's. The West also got to know the forró through an excellent collector put together by David Byrne. A trio of Brazilians… now play the forró from New York and occasionally fellow townsman David Byrne plays a tune on stage. Most of the songs on Forro In The Dark are by forró legend Luiz Gonzaga, the songwriter who single-handedly kept the genre alive for years. Forro In The Dark takes a traditional approach and keeps it mostly instrumental. In fairness it should be noted that they, despite this fine CD, it lost out to their old teacher Gonzaga. (PdK)more
