Respect is the name of the biographical film about the legendary soul singer
Aretha Franklin that was released in 2021. Although the film has not received an entirely positive reception from the critics, the same applies to the (vocal) performance of Jennifer Hudson. This American singer became famous as a finalist of American Idol in 2004. Besides her singing career, she made a name for herself as
… an actress and won an Oscar for her supporting role in the film Dreamgirls. The makers of the film did well to cast Hudson, as she proves with every note. Even the high-pitched notes - which don't make Franklin's music equally suitable for every singer - come out of her mouth convincingly. Franklin's 1967 hit Respect (written by Otis Redding) almost immediately became the standard song of the American civil rights and feminism movement. Tragically, more than 50 years later, the call for respect is still extremely urgent, as evidenced by the Black Life Matters movement and the persistent gender inequality. At least with her rendition, Jennifer Hudson respectfully helps bring The Queen of Soul's classic into the 21st century. (JV)more
