The fusion of classical music with the brand-new art form was never before seen and controversial. Disney asked conductor Leopold Stokowski to write special arrangements for the Philadelphia Orchestra. To reproduce his music as best as possible, The Walt Disney Company came up with a first version of surround sound: Fantasound. Hardly any cinema could afford the system. In addition, an important sales market in Europe was lost due to the war. Fantasia was a flop and Walt Disney would never recoup his investment in his lifetime. However, the timeless film was reissued many times over the years, ultimately making it one of the best-selling Disney films.
