The film Berberian Sound Studio is set in 1976. Sound engineer Gilderoy, a nerd through and through, gets a job in Italy. He has to provide the low-budget horror film The Equestrian Vortex with sound effects. He creates the sounds of blood-curdling cries, the tearing of limbs and the inspection of body openings with red-hot pokers, with an extensive range of household utensils and rotting vegetables.
It goes without saying that this film features many scary soundscapes that fit well with the lurid character of the film. The music production was outsourced to the British duo Broadcast consisting of James Cargill and Trish Keenan, who passed away last year. They were gratefully influenced by Italian avant-garde composers such as Luciano Berio, Luigi Nono and Cathy Berberian. However, the soundtrack is not only filled with music that scares your body. Broadcast has also added many beautiful moments, often in the form of church music. The latter is already enough for some to get the shivers on your back. (AD)more
