Back in 1964, blues musician Taj Mahal and Ry Cooder recorded a record together for the first time, as part of the group Rising Sons. In a then heavily segregated (music) world, the different skin colors of the two were sufficient reason for their label not to release the album. The album in question,
Rising Sons feat. T.Mahal & Ry Cooder, was still released in 1992, and Cooder and Taj Mahal have
… certainly not lost sight of each other. Almost 60 years after their first sessions together, they recorded Get On Board: a collection of songs by blues musicians Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, who have been a major influence on this duo. The recordings are beautifully crafted and sound as if the two - accompanied by drummer/percussionist Joachim Cooder - were sitting next to you in your living room. Cooder obtained a similar sound with the famous recordings he produced of Buena Vista Social Club. At 75, he is now approaching the age of the old Cubans at the time, but he continues to tirelessly release music that he feels should not be lost to the world. (JV)more
