The 57-year-old, somewhat underrated alto saxophonist Sonny Fortune has made a beautiful new album for Blue Note with "From now on", which was made in Rudy van Gelder's studio. This album contains five compositions of his own and three compositions by others (the opening track "Glue Fingers" by Marcus Belgrave, "Come in out of the rain" by Larry Willis, which lasts over ten minutes and "Gift of
… love" by Rodger Grant) . Influences from Latin jazz can be discerned in the title track, which also shows the ever-further developed compositional qualities of Fortune. The CD is concluded with the sixteen minute long "Thoughts". Fortune has played with McCoy Tyner, Buddy Rich and Miles Davis, among others; on this CD on which he is the leader, he was accompanied by tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano, trumpet player Eddie Henderson, pianist John Hicks, bassist Santi Debriano, Jeff "Tain" Watts and percussionist Steve Berrios. A quirky jazz CD with a distinct sound of its own, which is certainly worthwhile!more
