Alto saxophonist and also soprano saxophonist Vincent Herring has put his personal stamp on pop songs by Billy Joel in particular with "Change the world". He plays "Rosalinda's eyes", "The stranger" and "Zanzibar". The arrangements are refreshing and Herring's jazz is very catchy, although the starting point for these pop tunes does not detract from the honest and professional approach of this jazz.
Herring was accompanied by pianist Joey Calderazzo, bassist Richie Goods, drummer Carl Allen and percussionist Daniel Sadownick. Trumpeter Roy Hargrove plays as a guest on Hank Mobley's delicious 'groovy' "Soft impressions". Other excellent songs are the title track "Change the world" and "Strolling" (by Prince). (JW) _more
