The second album "Turbulent flow" by saxophonist Mark Shim is razor-sharp from start to finish. This album contains seven self-composed compositions that are continuously inventive. Vibraphonist Stefon Harris, also an upcoming star of Blue Note, joins Shim on a number of songs, including "Survival tactics" with a fiery solo on marimba. The band is completed by Edward Simon on piano and fender, Drew
… Gress on bass and Eric Harland on drums. Shim prefers the bass of his tenor saxophone, which sets him apart from other players such as Joe Lovano or Chris Potter. The song "Recorda me" by Joe Henderson was also played by Shim, along with Greg Osby, among others, on the debut album of the supergroup New Directions. That makes it fun to compare the two versions.
