As a composer and trumpet player, Dave Douglas has always been developing music that pushes the traditional boundaries of jazz. It goes without saying that this involves a lot of experimentation, whereby the question arises whether all his work can still be labeled as jazz. On Strange Liberation Douglas clearly returns to jazz. On this CD one of his greatest wishes is fulfilled, namely that guitarist
… Bill Frisell be part of his group. The compositions on Strange Liberation are completely tailored to Frisell's body. Strange Liberation is intended for the advanced listener and although there are interfaces with fusion, the CD has nothing to do with this style. Sometimes the music has a strongly conjuring character, due to the subcutaneous tension and the restrained playing, then again the conventional paths of jazz are followed. (AD)more
