After more than twenty years of Pili Pili, Jasper van 't Hof had had enough and started Hot Lips, a new project without African musicians, but with an extensive horn section. It was a completely new challenge for Van 't Hof to compose music for these wind players, including Eric Vloeimans on trumpet and Annie Whitehead on trombone. Musically, Never Never Land harks back to the times of Pork Pie,
… his 1970s project with Philip Catherine and Charlie Mariano, when jazz funk enjoyed great popularity. Never Never Land contains typical European jazz, a combination of almost symphonic-like themes, draped on a bed of funky rhythms. Thanks to the inventiveness and originality of his compositions, Van 't Hof once again manages to surprise the Dutch jazz world in a fresh way. (AD)more
