After the honors fell to John Coltrane and Miles Davis, trombonist Conrad Herwig decided to use the compositions of saxophonist Wayne Shorter for his latest The Latin Side Of ... project. He focused on three periods in Shorter's career: the hard bop time he spent with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers (Ping Pong, This Is For Albert), his fertile period with the Blue Note label (Night Dreamer, El Gaucho,
… Adam's Apple, Footprints, Tom Thumb) and his time with Miles Davis (Masqualero). Herwig found out that many of Shorter's compositions lend themselves perfectly to Latin jazz interpretations. The accompaniment is in the hands of baritone saxophonist Ronnie Cuber, bassist Ruben Rodriguez, drummer Robby Ameen and special guests trumpet player Brian Lynch and pianist Eddie Palmieri. Especially the funky latino game of the latter brings a lot of life to the brewery on the last three pieces of this live registration. (AD)more
