Spirit Moves, the latest project by trumpet player Dave Douglas, was created in 2005 during the Festival Of New Trumpet Music. Together with drummer Nasheet Waits and the wind section players Vincent Chancey, Luis Bonilla and Marcus Rojas, he pays homage to the spirit of copper sounds, with eleven compositions in which soul comes first. Spirit Moves starts with the moody New Orleans sounds of The
… Love Affair, but soon moves to a more universal repertoire. The inspiration for this project lies not so much in the city of blaring brass, but more in the work of Lester Bowies Brass Fantasy Group. This ensemble explored the possibilities of a wind ensemble to the limit by arranging covers of all kinds of music for wind instruments. In that respect, Douglas takes a different approach with only two covers: Mr. Pitiful by Otis Redding and I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry by Hank Williams. In this way Douglas alternates his study of the possibilities of the wind instrument with light entertainment, so that the listener can occasionally relax. (AD)more
