This is the third part of Billy Cobham's Drum N Voice series. Like the previous parts, Cobham also recorded this CD in Milan. He is assisted by Novecento, a well-oiled machine that easily switches between (electronic) funk, jazz and rock. In other words, muscular fusion in which the groove is at least as important as free improvisation. Cobham is an excellent drummer, and it is to his credit that
… every song has a solid foundation. It is nice to sing for a variety of well-known voices. For example, Chaka Khan makes her appearance in the lazily surging Alive, where her layered vocals seem to come out of all the cracks of the speakers. Brian Auger also makes a positive contribution. He lifts the opening track Electric Man with screeching vintage keyboard work. Other guests on this album are Gino Vannelli, John Scofield and Alex Acuna. (PdK)more
