The American saxophonist James Brandon Lewis belongs to the young generation of jazz musicians who broaden their music with influences from funk, rock and hip hop. An UnRuly Manifesto is a tribute to the revolutionary 20th-century art movement surrealism and the equally pioneering jazz saxophonist with bassist in his wake.. Freedom, authenticity and out of the box thinking is what Lewis is looking
… for in his examples. He makes it happen himself with powerful playing and daring arrangements. Lewis expanded his former trio with trumpet player Jaimie Branch and electric guitarist Anthony Pirog. Both are given plenty of room to play alongside their bandleader, with fierce free jazz outbursts on heavyweight funk grooves. This band mainly plays on power in drawn-out pieces with a high improvisational content. Short melodic intermezzos give the listener the chance to take a breath in between, and that is no superfluous luxury on this overwhelming 21st century freefunk manifesto. (MR)more
