When a DJ makes an edit of an existing song, it's called a remix. When a band does the same, it used to be called a cover. Since the music market is now flooded by coverbands that play covers that are literally copied from A to Z of the original, the word 'cover' has got a rancid meaning in the eyes of serious musicians who put creativity above financial gain. That's why bands that make a version
… of an original song, but give their own input to it, prefer to use the word 're:imagination'. An expression that is very well spent on the new generation of British jazz musicians. Commissioned by Blue Note they each took a part of the classical Blue Note repertoire and gave it their own twist. Some bands remain remarkably true to the original version, while others replace the swing from the original with tight hip-hop beats. But anyway, they all leave their own mark on the music. (AD)more
