Before they met at the Cornelia Street Café in New York's melting pot, all three had already built up quite a reputation on the jazz scene; British saxophonist Will Vinson, guitarist Gilad Hekselman from Israel and Mexican-born drummer António Sanchez. But the chemistry and excitement of that first meeting was no less, it is said. This debut album - released under the somewhat obvious name Trio
… Grande - captures that feeling. You can hear the pleasure of playing by the three musicians who enjoy the freedom offered. They divide the eight songs as democratically as possible. Musically it goes in all directions, from classical fusion to today's exciting electronic jazz. Highlights are the festive Elli Yeled Tov and just subdued, almost religious Oberkampf (both by Hekselman) and Sanchez' tearing Gocta. A debut that tastes like more than that. (RME)more
