They know each other from New York's avant-garde jazz scene, where they both played with
John Zorn, among others. However, the quintet Soundprints formed trumpeter Dave Douglas and saxophonist Joe Lovano to honor
Wayne Shorter on stage at the Monterey Jazz Festival in 2013. The concert (featuring two new Shorter compositions) appeared on album two years later, and follow-up Scandal (2018) also
… featured songs by Shorter. Other Worlds consists of compositions by the duo themselves, but the spirit of Shorter does haunt it, as does that of Eric Dolphy and Ornette Coleman. As two progressive jazz musicians, Lovano and Douglas honor the avant-garde jazz and post-bop of the 60s with their whimsical interplay. It certainly doesn't sound dated, but lively and creative in the hands of this duo and their solid band. (MR)more
