Along with
Toots Thielemans, Philippe Catherine is among the most famous jazz musicians Belgium has produced. In his long career, the almost 80-year-old guitarist has collaborated with the likes of
Charles Mingus,
Chet Baker and
Stéphane Grappelli. On Pourquoi he plays with guitarist Paulo Morello and bassist Sven Faller. With this trio he previously recorded Manoir De Mes Rêves (2019) and has
… since played frequently. The percussion-less formation mainly plays pieces by Catherine and focuses on atmospheric and tuneful, but mostly melodic swing. Catherine has a beautiful tone, in which his many decades of experience can be heard clearly. Also, the influence of his great example Django Reinhardt is always present to a greater or lesser extent. The elderly Belgian doesn't play a note too many and also knows how to find a nice balance with his fellow musicians. (JV)more
