When young trumpeter Marquis Hill self-released his debut album New Gospel in 2011, it was hardly noticed. Over 10 years later, that's different. In 2014 he won the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz International Trumpet Competition and since then he can count on the attention of the major jazz labels. The trumpeter from Chicago is now among the top of the new generation of American jazz
… musicians. For New Gospel Revisited, a live album on which he looks back at New Gospel, he put together a super band from the aforementioned generation, including the acclaimed vibraphonist Joel Ross and saxophonist Walter Smith III. Just like Marquis himself, they are widely oriented musicians who, on New Gospel Revisited, let loose on steamy and whimsical contemporary post-bop with elements of free jazz. The intimate live atmosphere contributes to making the intense New Gospel Revisited sound like a wild adventure for a group of unattached musicians under Hill's inspired direction. (MR)more
