Norwegian jazz guitarist Gaute Storsve is a fine example of the many adventurous musicians the Scandinavian jazz scene has to offer. Storsve lived and worked for a time in Cuba where he became influenced by the Cuban son, also by the Mexican bolero. These are sounds that can clearly be heard on El Gran Gotzilla, an adventurous musical journey in which Scandinavian jazz mixes in a relaxed way with
… South American percussion. The batá, played by Storsve's Cuban friend Angel Terry Domech, for example, lays a clear Cuban foundation in Beta Batá Beat. The guitar melodies placed over it sound typically European again. But combined with each other in Storsve's evocative compositions, the fusion works particularly well. A bold and successful experiment. (JV)more
