On April 22, 2022, double bassist and bandleader
Charles Mingus would have turned 100. Although the American jazz musician died in 1979, his musical legacy continues to exert great influence on generations to come. First, through his compositions, which are still widely performed and many of which have entered the canon of jazz standards. Secondly, through his work as a bandleader, in which he took
… his groups, as a collective, into his vision of blues, free jazz and big bands. On the occasion of this anniversary, Siegfried Loch, founder of the German jazz label ACT, organized a concert, the artistic direction of which was in the hands of bassist Georg Breinschmid and saxophonist Magnus Lindgren. This concert recording features six Mingus compositions. That the musicians are not only focused on performing the compositions, but precisely on playing "in the spirit of Mingus", makes it a worthy tribute, on which classics such as Goodbye Pork Pie Hat and Boogie Stop Shuffle are of course not missing.
