With Renaissance, the next great talent from the London jazz scene is presenting itself. A multi-instrumentalist, DoomCannon (real name
Dominic Canning) gained ample experience with the likes of
Jools Holland,
TriForce and
Nubya Garcia, before now releasing his own debut record. He does so on the famed Brownswood Recordings, which also brought us the fresh debut from
Kokoroko shortly before. Nice
… record, but with Renaissance DoomCannon aims considerably higher. The album, which is bursting with ambition and quality, features seven other musicians who form a rich line-up of drums, violins, cello, guitar, double bass and saxophone. Atop a foundation of improvised jazz, the company unfolds a musical spectrum from blues (Uncovering Truth) to hip-hop (This Too) and from electronics to the orchestral sound of highlight Times. In songs like Amalgamation and the closing diptych Black Liberation, DoomCannon also shows itself to be a socially engaged artist. One that deserves to be heard en masse. (RME)more
