When British jazz trumpeter Matthew Halsall created the 2020 release
Salute To The Sun, he did so by creating a community of sorts with a weekly session. The group of musicians inspired him so much that around the same time he also recorded the ep The Temple Within, consisting of four long pieces. Defining the group's sound are the harp and flute, which fit nicely with the spiritual and sometimes
… mysterious nature of the music. But the band also knows how to create beautiful grooves, such as on The Eleventh Hour. With drone sounds in the background and a continuous danceable rhythm, the musicians move elastically with the dynamics of the soloists. Although The Temple Within is presented almost as a bonus CD of its predecessor, this does not detract from the level of the music and showcases a feat of ensemble playing of the highest order.
