Jazz guitarist Julian Lage is a musician who masters his craft in such a way that when listening to his music, almost a kind of habituation occurs. Every phrase he plays is designed in a thoughtful, tasteful and controlled manner. For this reason, it is conceivable that his music, even among aficionados, may not completely stick. … Note, he seems to want to do something about that. With his compositions he delves even deeper, which leads to fewer notes and themes that sound more pronounced. The trio that he forms with drummer Dave King and double bassist Jorge Roeder has, if possible, started to play even better together, but on the record they have also been reinforced by guitarist Bill Frisell. The latter provides an extra layer with ethereal effects and other forms of overdubs that definitely benefit Lage's compositions. Producer of the record is Margaret Glaspy, Lage's lover and a singer-songwriter who seeks surprise with her productions, as for example on her record Devotion (2020).
