The American composer, saxophonist and label owner John Zorn releases so unbelievably much through his record label Tzadik that even well-intentioned fans will sometimes be unable to see the forest for the trees. In addition to that large output, the genres in which Zorn operates alternate with frightening speed. For free jazz, metal or folk Zorn does not turn his hand away. The only common denominator
… between all his work is that it is radically avant-garde in spirit: in that sense, Zorn embodies the epitome of uncompromisingness. Nothing Is As Real As Nothing is a suite for three acoustic guitars, dedicated to the great (stage) writer and poet Samuel Beckett. The outstanding trio of Bill Frisell, Julian Lage and Gyan Riley (a son of minimal composer Terry Riley) play within a musical idiom borrowed from folk, provided, of course, with avant-garde contours derived from Zorn's mind.
