American saxophonist Sam Gendel owns a decidedly eclectic discography, which includes music from the genres of indie rock, R&B and jazz. Fabiano Do Nascimiento is also difficult to pigeonhole. The Brazilian guitarist is influenced by bossa nova great
Baden Powell, but his music also certainly could not have existed without contemporary hip-hop, for one thing. The Room, the two's joint album, is
… equally difficult to pigeonhole, which makes it a fascinating record. The pieces are minimalist, guitar and saxophone with no additions. It is not a crazy idea to draw a parallel between The Room and Getz/Gilberto, the now-classic 1964 album by Stan Getz and João Gilberto. Although both guitarists and both saxophonists have similar backgrounds, the result could hardly have been more different. Not surprising, since Getz/Gilberto - which was made in collaboration with Antonio Carlos Jobim - was released exactly 60 years earlier. Then again, the fact that music has changed so much in those years is due to a common trait among musicians: innovativeness. (JV)more
