American singer Cécile McLorin Salvant settled in France to study classical singing. However, jazz started to get her interest more and more so she eventually made a switch. This did her no harm. In 2010 she won first prize in the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. On the occasion of her second album (2013), she led no fewer than four categories in the annual poll of the
… American jazz magazine Down Beat. Not surprising, because McLorin Salvant can sing. On One For Love she knows exactly how to give meaning to almost every sentence and even her own voice. So we hear her growling as easily as as sounding sultry à la . But she lacks the soul of the first and the smokiness of the second. Every song looks like a theater piece and a sample of her powerful voice. She is still young (from 1989) so maybe McLorin Salvant still has to learn to use her technique more for feeling. That would make her a real vocal hurricane. (MR)more
