Since the 1980s, Texan Lyle Lovett has been following his own path in American roots music. He is often classified (for convenience) as country, but the spectrum of this striking singer-songwriter is much broader. The album is full of more cheerfulness, in which he seems to want to please not only his children, but also their mothers. His songs always sound tightly arranged, with plenty of brass and an important supporting role for blues and gospel singer Francine Reed who frames Lovett's sweet vocals with lived-in edges. In pleasantly sentimental fashion, Lovett shares with the listener that life is smiling on him. (MR)more
