In the early 1970s, Shuggie Otis was considered a child prodigy. He was the son of the well-known band leader and played the guitar in his father's band more than creditably. In addition, he released three solo albums for which he recorded all the instruments himself. His latest (Inspiration Information from 1974) is considered his best. Unfortunately that album did not sell well and record company
… threw Shuggie out on the street. Sad, but you have to take your time for Otis' music. His thin voice lacked the bravado that characterized other soul singers, but the delicate guitar work and original arrangements on Inspiration Information are pleasing to the ear. Otis did everything himself and pioneered the use of a drum computer. Not so surprising that once admitted to having 'studied the music of Shuggie Otis'. After 1974 Otis withdrew from public life, although he still made music. (PdK)more
