Joe Henry was born in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1960. There are people who only know him because he is married to Madonna's sister, Mrs. Ciccone. However, he has been making music since 1986 and made his debut in 1989 with Murder Of Crows. In the Netherlands the albums Shuffletown (1990), Short Man's Room (1992) and Kindness Of The World (1993) are best known. On these albums he collaborated with
… The Jayhawks and T-Bone Burnett, among others. Ever since then he's usually put in the singer / songwriter box. He was also sometimes carefully compared to Bob Dylan, but that was mainly due to his characteristic, somewhat nasal voice. However, on his more recent albums he showed that he has a lot more to offer. He experimented with samplers and other electronics on Fuse from 1999. And the music on Scar is also different from what we are used to from Henry. This time he was inspired by jazz great Duke Ellington and comedy actor Richard Pryor (!). He was helped by great musicians like Brian Blade (drums), Ornette Coleman (saxophone), Brad Mehldau (keys), Marc Ribot (guitar) and Me'Shell Ndegéocello (bass). Although these names are mainly known in jazz circles, Scar has certainly not become a jazz record. Rather, it is a crossover album, on which all kinds of styles are successfully combined. All musicians play in the service of the very strong songs of Henry, who once again steals the show with his voice. Scar has become a versatile record with the highlights being Mean Flower, Cold Enough To Cross and the title track.
