Despite its success, the English group Jamiroquai hardly appeals to the imagination. There is little to criticize about the music. Ever since the debut in 1993, Jamiroquai has been creating a flawless mix of house and soul from the seventies, especially the funk of is an obvious reference. The singer (the one in the fur hat) is doing well on MTV but few will recognize him when they meet him on the
… street, and even fewer people will know his name (Jason Kay). The group has noticeably sprung from the dance culture where the people behind the music usually maintain a certain anonymity. It is therefore not very strange that Jamiroquai, despite a few big hits, never managed to reach the real mega status. With A Funk Odyssey, the group will probably not be able to attract many new fans. It is again a high-quality record, but even after a few spins there is no 'killer track' like Deeper Underground for example. The music listens as always, but the noncommittal nature that was always present, threatens to gain the upper hand. It's time for Jamiroquai to reinvent itself otherwise the group will lose its credit to a lot of people. (MS)more
